Sailing Program Director
Portland Yacht Club - Falmouth, ME , United States of America
PYC Junior Sailing has a long history of successfully developing sailors from 6 to 16+ -- not just their sailing skills but also, and more important, life skills: self-confidence, individual responsibility, teamwork, leadership, followership, and how to have fun. If you don't have fun, nothin' gets done.
We turn out first-class racers, staring in Optis and 420s and eventually moving on to bigger boats. Just recently one of our program alumni won the U.S. Sailing Mallory Trophy. Most kids don't go to those heights, of course. Instead, we see them as crew on local race boats, taking the helm when cruising with parents, buying boats of their own, becoming Club members (we give them preference in our membership policies), and sending their own children, and now even grandchildren, to follow in their boat-shoe footsteps.
We want to maintain our tradition of excellence, of course. But that's the floor, not the ceiling. We need someone who will enhance the program. If that's you, read on.
The Program Director works with the Junior Program Officer (Board member), Parent Advisory Board, and Club Manager to fulfill six areas of responsibility:
A. Program Development and Management
B. Personnel Management
C. Program Marketing
E. Boat and Equipment Preservation and Maintenance
F. Financial Management
Each of these areas has specific assignments and tasks. We'll be happy to send the complete job description.
This job is full time from mid-June to the end of August. We also need the Director to participate in hiring coaches, planning the program, registering students, and similar tasks early in the new year, if not sooner. Some of this work can be done via email, Skype, etc. However, we would want the person to be present occasionally during this period.
US Level 1, 2, or 3
Safe Boating Certificate
Current First Aid, CPR and Defibrillator Training
Commitment to Safety
Prior Youth Sailing Coaching Experience
Comfortable with WORD, Excel, and similar. (We are a Mac shop)
Able to plan, organize, and execute activities
Will likely coach on the water only when filling in for an absent coach, but should be on the water regularly observing activities
Must be able to work with parents, some of whom may be unhappy at times. Defensiveness is not a virtue in a job like this. Neither is knuckling under.
